Brian Furman obtained his BPharm degree in 1966, registering as a pharmacist in 1971, and remaining on the register until now. After obtaining his PhD from the University of Bradford, he joined the University of Strathclyde as lecturer in pharmacology in 1969 being promoted to senior lecturer in 1982, reader in 1998 and professor in 2004. He succeeded Bill Bowman as Head of Department of Physiology & Pharmacology from 1994-2000 and then served as Dean of the Faculty of Science from 2002-2008, becoming Emeritus Professor following retirement in 2008. His major research interests remain in diabetes and obesity and he retains an active interest in research and pharmacy education, reviewing papers for many journals, and acting as consultant to universities in the UK and overseas, as well as working with the General Pharmaceutical Council on activities concerned with the accreditation of MPharm degree and Independent Prescribing programmes.
